Croque Monsieur
I’ve been obsessed with a Croque Monsieur ever since I first tried them on a French holiday as a child. Simple and incredibly tasty.
UNDER 10 MINS
Ingredients
- 4 slices of white bread
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 4 slices of ham
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the flour and whisk continuously for about a minute until it forms a roux.
- Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
- Cook the sauce, whisking constantly, until it thickens, about 3 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place a slice of ham on two of the bread slices.
- Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese over the ham.
- Top with the other two slices of bread, mustard side down, to form sandwiches.
- Heat a pan over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side.
- Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet.
- Spoon the béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
