Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur

I’ve been obsessed with a Croque Monsieur ever since I first tried them on a French holiday as a child. Simple and incredibly tasty.

UNDER 10 MINS

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about a minute until it forms a roux.
  4. Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
  5. Cook the sauce, whisking constantly, until it thickens, about 3 minutes.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Remove from heat and set aside.
  7. Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread.
  8. Place a slice of ham on two of the bread slices.
  9. Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese over the ham.
  10. Top with the other two slices of bread, mustard side down, to form sandwiches.
  11. Heat a pan over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
  12. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side.
  13. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet.
  14. Spoon the béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top.
  15. Bake in the preheated oven for about 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
